WTCAC VISUAL MERCHANDISING

Join Mike Demchik and Les Werner as we follow trees from standing stock to milled wood. In this workshop we will explore how defects move through a log by evaluating the standing stock of three species, cutting them down, merchandising and grading the down logs, and milling them on site. Throughout this process we will discuss the following:

  • Log grading
  • Standing stock grading
  • Merchandising/buckling of felled trees
  • External grades based on surface defects
  • Milling, grading, and scaling of lumber
  • Marking implications
  • Management strategies

2024 WTCAC Visual Merchandising workshop agenda

The training will be a mixture of indoors and outdoors and participants can expect to walk a fair distance over uneven terrain or off-trail. We encourage you to wear long pants and sturdy, waterproof footwear, as the ground may be muddy, icy, wet, or slippery. Please dress appropriately as we will be heading outside rain or shine.

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS

Mike Demchik, Ph.D.

Professor of Silviculture, UW-Stevens Point

Michael Demchik is a professor of forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He teaches a wide range of courses at UWSP and is involved in research that addresses using silviculture to reach landowner goals. He is particularly obsessed with developing methods to teach students to mark timber better, faster, and with more confidence in their decisions. He has had several jobs across federal, state, and private natural resource management in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Les Werner, Ph.D.

Emeritus Professor of Forestry, UW-Stevens Point

Les Werner is an Emeritus Professor of Forestry and Founding Director of the Wisconsin Forestry Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Dr. Werner has taught courses in functional tree biology, arboriculture, and forest soils. In 2019 he received the Alex L. Shigo Award for Excellence in Education from the International Society of Arboriculture. His research has ranged from an evaluation of fertilizer recovery rates in juvenile and mature trees to changes in soil microbial communities along a land-use continuum. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to his appointment at UWSP, Werner spent 21 years working as a municipal and commercial arborist and business owner.
