Ecological Silviculture Webinar Series

What Is Ecological Silviculture?

Jan. 22, 2025 | Noon-1 p.m. CT

Dr. Anthony “Tony” D’Amato is a professor of silviculture and applied forest ecology and director of the Forestry Program in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont. Tony’s research interests center on evaluating the efficacy of traditional and experimental silvicultural strategies at meeting the increasingly diverse range of forest management objectives on public and private land. He is a coauthor of the recent book Ecological Silviculture – Foundations and Applications, which explores silviculture methods based on natural forest models that emulate natural disturbance. In this webinar, Tony will present the foundation and principles behind these silviculture strategies we call “ecological silviculture.”

PRESENTER

Tony D’Amato, Ph.D.

Professor of Silviculture and Applied Forest Ecology, University of Vermont

Dr. Tony D’Amato is a professor of silviculture and applied forest ecology and director of the forestry Program at the University of Vermont. He was a faculty member for seven years in the Department of Forest Resources at the University of Minnesota, as well as a Bullard Fellow at Harvard University’s Harvard Forest prior to joining the University of Vermont in January 2015. His research focuses on long-term forest dynamics, disturbance effects on ecosystem structure and function, and silvicultural strategies for conferring adaptation potential within the context of global change, including introduced insects and diseases.

MODERATOR

Michael Demchik, Ph.D.

Professor of Silviculture, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Michael Demchik is a professor of forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He teaches a wide range of courses at UWSP and is involved in research that addresses using silviculture to reach landowner goals. He is particularly obsessed with developing methods to teach students to mark timber better, faster, and with more confidence in their decisions. He has had several jobs across federal, state, and private natural resource management in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
