Contemporary works by a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty member are now being featured at the UW-Stevens Point Edna Carlsten Art Gallery. An open reception and artist talk will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, from 5-7 p.m.

“WISCONTEMPORARY,” featuring works by Andy Gambrell, assistant professor of art, is on display through Thursday, Dec. 5.

Gambrell’s art has been featured in more than ninety exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. The artist’s works are in private collections in the US, Canada, Colombia, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

His painting practice was shaped by formative years spent in Miami within a community of abstract painters that included late modern masters such as Jules Olitski and Darby Bannard.

Gambrell’s contemporary work renews and extends American abstract painting through his use of an eye-tracking viewfinder he developed to create digital drawings of the path his eyes follow while taking in the Wisconsin landscape. From the wilderness of Arizona to the fields of Wisconsin, this process of abstract painting results in a fresh, beautiful celebration of the American landscape.
