KEEP offers self-paced, online trainings for educators and community members.

ENERGY EDUCATION: CONCEPTS AND PRACTICES – On-Demand
Meets EE Stipulation

Participants will gain fundamental knowledge of energy while participating in this self-paced online training which addresses energy concepts relating to energy definitions, natural laws of energy, energy flows in living and non-living systems, and their relationships to understanding and evaluating environmental issues. Training activities include the exploration of energy readings and pertinent websites; and home activities such as reading utility bills, home energy audits, and calculating the wattages of various home appliances.

Offerings LIST

These offerings may be in our upcoming trainings or available by request. Contact us to inquire about any of the following offerings or check our upcoming events registration portal.

ACADEMIC & CAREER PLANNING: CUSTOMIZING DPI ENERGY CAREER PATHWAY FOR YOUR SCHOOL

This training provides support to educators who are customizing the Energy Career Pathway for their school district or region. With guiding documents provided by KEEP, participants will work independently and in groups to identify courses offered by their school district which align with the Energy Career Pathway and determine the two other components required adoption of the pathway: CTSO, WBLE, IRC, and dual-enrollment options.

BUILDING ENERGY DETECTIVES

In this training, educators explore ready-to-use Building Energy Detectives lessons using tools from the Energy Audit Kit. Participants will use the tools to investigate energy use in their educational spaces and identify actions which reduce energy loss and consumption in their building. Educators will explore Google-platform lessons and activities they can easily adapt and confidently teach within their curriculum.  Lessons seamlessly integrate technology into science and math concepts, making real-world applications of energy conservation engaging and educational.

DISCOVERING ENERGY IN NATURE

In this training, educators will experience energy lessons that can effectively be taught outside. Activities including taking temperatures to investigate how shading, coloring, and other factors affect temperature, surveying different environments to determine how non-living elements affect living elements in an ecosystem, and how energy flows through a food chain. Educators will leave ready to confidently teach energy concepts outdoors using KEEP kit tools and resources. Recommended for educators of grades K-6, adaptable for 7-12.

ELEMENTARY ENERGY EXPLORATIONS

In this training, educators explore ready-to-use Elementary Energy Explorations lessons using materials from the corresponding KEEP kit. The lessons are grounded in the phenomenon of how flipping a switch leads to filling a room with light. Educators will gain confidence exploring what energy and electricity are, where electricity comes from, the impact getting our energy has on the environment, how electricity gets to our homes and buildings, and how circuits and switches work. Educators will leave ready to confidently teach energy concepts in their classrooms using KEEP resources in/on Google platform. Recommended for teachers of grades 3 – 8.

ENERGY EDUCATION FOR PRE-SERVICE EDUCATORS

Energy Education for Pre-Service Teachers introduces students to creative ways to bring energy education into their future classrooms. With activities that can be adapted to many grade levels and subject areas, participants receive hands-on experience with concepts that bring an awareness of energy in our daily lives, the worldwide resources needed to fuel our energy usage, and an introduction to future energy issues across the globe. Discussion surrounding common at-home practices, combined with the connection between our energy consumption and global energy issues, make this training an invaluable experience for our future educators.

KIDWIND EDUCATOR WORKSHOP

Learn how to explore the power of wind with your students! In this workshop you will review energy and electricity basics, design and test blades in a wind tunnel, explore related KEEP energy education resources, and preview ready-to-use renewable energy curriculum. Participants also learn about the Wisconsin KidWind Challenge that takes place in spring each year and gain tips for coaching student teams through the process of designing and constructing small-scale turbines. Recommended for teachers of grades 4-12.

RENEWABLE ENERGY: POWER UP WITH SOLAR PV!

Solar PV applications are seen everywhere from road signs to enormous arrays for generating utility-scale electricity! Get your students excited about solar energy and the implications it has for our environment and economy while exploring potential careers in the energy industry. This workshop provides hands-on activities that utilize the KEEP Solar Tilt and Solar Load kits and standards-aligned companion lessons. You will learn how solar panels work, use professional tools for siting solar PV installations, and use tools in the kits to discover how the angle of the sun impacts the electricity generated by a solar panel.

This workshop is ideal for Science and Social Studies teachers. Recommended for teachers of grades 4-12.

RENEWABLE ENERGY: USING SCHOOL SOLAR DASHBOARDS

Use your school’s solar resource to engage students and drive teaching and learning with relevant experiences. Your solar electric system can be used in math, science, and social studies lessons to analyze data and explore how the utilization of renewable energy impacts our community. Recommended for teachers of any grade in schools which have installed solar PV
