Applied Sociology Practicum
The UWSP Applied Sociology Practicum (ASP) helps students connect the theoretical and conceptual contribution of the classroom with the practical world of the practice setting. All sociology majors must complete the ASP. We simplify the process for students, working directly through our established partnerships; your field coordinator assists you in a placement that meets student preferences.
Applied Sociology Practicum includes two options
1. Field Internship Placements
Refer to traditional internships with a partnered community agency or organization.
2. Research Placements
Refer to an academic research project or community program evaluation.
Practicum Student Benefits:
- Supportive supervisors who are ready to help you grow and learn.
- Answers to questions. Placements support two-way learning by agencies/research mentors and interns.
- The unique experience of working with industry professionals.
- A chance to grow outside of your comfort zone. Learn where you thrive the most!
- Build professional connections to guide you after graduation.
Placement Process
Students will observe and apply sociological practice under the guidance of cooperating field placement supervisors/research mentors in an approved placement. The Department connects students with placements in their areas of interest.
Learn about the steps in the placement process:
Beginning in the student’s junior year, enroll in SOC 492 and 493. Complete the ASP Application to apply for the practicum. Students will submit a resume and cover letter. Attend all departmental meetings for the ASP.
The field coordinator will review each student’s ASP preference and partnership availability. We want to ensure a great fit between our students and community needs. ASP field coordinator will get in touch with students about available opportunities. No need to go it alone!
We want you to be successful in your match! The field coordinator will provide resources for the interview process so students can best present their talents in the interview with their preferred placement.
We’ll prepare students with effective interview skills. If it doesn’t work out, the field coordinator will help you to find a new match within your interest area.
