Conducting Symposium

On November 22-23, 2024, UW-Stevens Point Department of Music will be running the very first conducting symposium, Get to the Point!, led by John Lynch, Director of Bands, and Matheus Cruz, Director of Choral Activities. This is a course and event not to be missed! Please see the options below for enrolled vs. non-enrolled participants and auditors.

Enrolled MME Participants and Auditors:
For those who are interested in this course and currently enrolled in the Master of Music Education program, you are required to enroll in this course for either three credits as a participant or one credit as an auditor. Both enrolled participants and auditors will have access to pre-symposium Zoom classes beginning the week of November 4, 2024, and will wrap up by December 6, 2024.

Enrolled participants will have rehearsal time with UWSP ensembles, will receive feedback from Drs. Lynch and Cruz and may participate in all sessions and lectures.

Enrolled auditors are welcome to observe rehearsals in-person or online and may participate in all sessions and lectures.

This course is listed as MUS 650 under Drs. Lynch and Cruz and counts towards both the MME degree as an elective and the Graduate Conducting Certificate. MME students should enroll by October 21, 2024.

Enrolled MME Students:
Participants – Enroll for three credits of MUS 650
Auditors – Enroll for one credit of MUS 650

Non-Enrolled Registrants:
If you are not currently enrolled in the MME program at UWSP, you are welcome to register as a participant or auditor.
Non-MME participants will have rehearsal time with UWSP ensembles and may participate in all sessions and lectures during the symposium.
Non-MME auditors are welcome to observe rehearsals in-person or online and may participate in all sessions and lectures at the symposium.

Non-Enrolled Registrants:
Participants – $350 payable at registration
Auditors – $250 payable at registration

Non-MME participants and auditors should register by November 1, 2024.

  • 4 p.m. Welcome and Rehearsal Session
  • 6 p.m. Dinner provided
  • 6:30 p.m. Rehearsal Session 1 continued
  • 8 p.m. Discussion

Saturday, November 23

  • 8 a.m. Movement/Body Session 1
  • 9 a.m. Rehearsal Session 2
  • 12:30 p.m. Lunch on your own
  • 1:30 p.m. Movement/Body Session 2
  • 2:30 p.m.  Rehearsal Techniques Lecture
  • 3:30 p.m. Movement/Baton Technique Session
  • 4:30 p.m. Final Discussion
  • 5 p.m. Group Photo
