College of Professional Studies
The
College of Profession Studies (CPS) houses many of
UWSP's pre-professional programs, including business and
economics, education, interior architecture, dietetics,
health sciences, health promotion, athletic training and
clinical lab sciences.
The
College of Professional Studies is home to the
CPS Cafe, which operates as a food service business.
Dietetic students get experience in all aspects of food
service operation and management.
"The goal of the CPS Cafe is to provide homemade,
healthful food from local, sustainable farms and to manage
production in an environmentally friendly manner."
Health Promotion and Human Development students also
practice sustainability in the classroom. The CPS is a
collaboration partner on the
Central Wisconsin Farm Fresh Atlas and the CPS faculty
purchases local seasonal foods whenever they are available
from the Stevens Point Farmer's Market or local producers
for use in food and nutrition labs. CPS students and staff
also recycle all packages and containers and compost food
waste, which is used by students coordinating the campus
garden.
The
CPS Division of Interior Architecture incorporates goals
and objectives into its program to raise awareness on issues
of sustainability and a concern for the environment.
"Focus is on the ability to design quality interior
environments that contribute to the well-being and safety of
individuals and groups along with incorporating a concern
for the environmental well-being of the earth, including
“green” sustainable design."
Two interior architecture courses, IA 130: Architectural
Environments and IA 315: Sustainable Design, offer students
guidance in sustainable design practices. Architectural
Environments covers a comprehensive introduction to global
climate change, impact on natural and built environments,
and the role of the building industry. Sustainable Design
covers specific issues related to sustainable design
including the LEED rating process.
In addition to these courses, the IA faculty strongly
encourages students to think green and practice the most
sustainable methods when designing any space. The IA
department is also hoping to establish a Sustainable
Resource Center within the division in the near future.
In other efforts, the College of Professional Studies has
recently undergone a number of renovations in which green
products were incorporated. Energy efficient lighting,
low-VOC paint, and green flooring were used in the process.
The Department of Interior Architecture also uses recycled
paper and rechargeable batteries, as well as recycles all
paper, plastics, and ink cartridges. Students are encouraged
to work online to save paper as well.
