Residential Living staff are here to support you in your academic
pursuits. That is our ultimate purpose. We fulfill that purpose by
providing clean, comfortable buildings through our Building Services
people; by providing innovative programming and educational
opportunities through our Community Development and Education
people; and by keeping residents informed through our Administrative
Services people.
Director, Residential Living
Joe Totman
oversees the Department of Residential Living. "We want our
residents to see the halls as their home and to know that we support
them in any way we can. I encourage residents to seek out services
that are offered through Residential Living, either within their
hall or through our central office, and the other academic support
units located throughout campus."
Administrative Services
Susan
Malnory coordinates the efforts of the Administrative Services
area. The people here will assist you with your housing contract,
publish brochures, information pieces (including this website!),
manage budget issues, and run the in-hall computer labs. The
individuals who answer the main phone lines for Residential Living
(715/346-3511) work in the Administrative Services area and are
often student employees who have a special understanding of life in
the residence halls.
Kathleen Reck oversees the assignment process for returning and
new students, reviews requests from freshmen and sophomores looking
to be exempt from the UW
Board of Regents' on-campus residency policy, and is the
department's webmaster.
Building Services
Mike Zsido
oversees this vast area which responds to requests that range from
cable television problems to building damages to renovating shared
space within our halls. Building Services personnel are dedicated to
making certain that our buildings are safe, aesthetically-pleasing,
comfortable places for you to live. Should you have any difficulties
with the physical aspects of your hall, contact your residence hall
director.
Community Development and Education
There is a large contingent of personnel dedicated to making life in
the residence halls interesting, educational, and fulfilling.
Kris
Hoffenberger works closely with the
ACES program, ARC
to Success program, as well as with the Office of Rights and
Responsibility. Kris' duties include supervision of residence hall
directors.
Shari
Summers coordinates the
Freshman Interest Groups and the department's diversity
advocates program.
Julie Zsido advises the Residence Hall Association, develops
leadership training opportunities, and coordinates departmental
research and recognition efforts. Julie's duties also include
supervision of residence hall directors.
In-Hall Staff
Residence Hall Directors are our full-time employees who
live and work in each of the residence halls. All of our directors
have a college degree; most have additional education or a master's
degree.
Assistant to the Hall Directors are student staff who
assist their Hall Director by coordinating facilities concerns
within each hall and managing the front desk of their residence
hall.
Community Advisors (CAs) are student staff who live on
your floor (in most buildings, there are two CAs on each floor)
whose primary function is to assist their residents in their
day-to-day residential needs. CAs also help residents develop their
floor/house community and provide guidance in deciding on house
programs.
Academic Resource Coordinators (ARCs) are also student
staff who have been specially trained to help residents with
academic concerns. ARCs can coach residents in time management and
study skills; he or she is also familiar with campus departments
which assist students academically.
