Verification of FAFSA
The federal FAFSA processor selects approximately 30% of student
applications for verification. As a result of this, they are
informing the school to verify the data (i.e. to check and make
certain the FAFSA was filled out correctly). Sometimes students are
selected because they have improbable data, sometimes the data is
outside of a threshold, and sometimes it is a random selection.
The school must acquire the necessary data from the student (and
parents, if the student is considered dependent for financial aid)
to perform the necessary checks. The school either mails a paper
copy or emails a link to the form that must be completed and
submitted, and requests the necessary 1040 forms or 1040's and W-2
forms or W-2's as well. The form cannot be transmitted back
electronically since other forms must be returned with it.
Please act quickly when informed of the need for verification. An
award will not be made, nor will funds be disbursed before
verification is complete.
